Earlier this year, Poker Central announced the first-ever player of the year program made exclusively for high rollers. The 2018 High Roller of the Year race concluded with Super High Roller Bowl V and Sam Soverel held off some of the world’s best to secure the title.

Across a shortened inaugural season, Soverel accumulated 1,765 High Roller of the Year points. Isaac Haxton, who won Super High Roller Bowl V, finished 2nd with 1,530 points. The 2018 High Roller of the Year race included results from High Roller Triple Crown events, the ARIA High Roller Series, and World Series of Poker events including the $1,000,000 buy-in Big One for One Drop.

The final High Roller of the Year top-five is below and the entire 2018 leaderboard can be found here.

Soverel’s High Roller of the Year victory becomes even more impressive when you take a deeper dive into the numbers. His 20 cashes were more than double every other player on the High Roller of the Year leaderboard except Cary Katz and Jake Schindler. Soverel’s nine victories also equal the number of combined wins from the rest of the top-five.

The only statistical category that Soverel failed to dominate was total earnings. What the High Roller of the Year winner lacked in big scores, he made up for in consistency. While Soverel did not cash in high multiplier events, he dominated the smaller buy-in ARIA High Roller Series events.

Soverel also showed his abilities across multiple variants. He was the only player to win No Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha, and Short Deck events during the 2018 season.

For his High Roller of the Year victory, Soverel earns rake-free entry into all 2019 ARIA High Roller events. High Roller of the Year also returns in 2019, beginning with the U.S. Poker Open on February 13. USPO information can be found here and follow Poker Central for more information on the 2019 High Roller of the Year race.
